Doctors removed an
Encephalocele of a new born baby
after a successful 150 minutes
surgery procedure at Royal
Commission Hospital in Jubail

In the Royal
Commission Hospital , Jubail. Dr.
Mahmood Hassan, Consultant
Neurosurgeon performed a surgical
procedure upon a newborn baby with
sack-like protrusion of the brain,
nearly the same size of the baby's
head (17 X 13 X11 cm). It is a
neural tube defect characterized by
protrusion of the brain with its
coverings through developmental
defects in the skull. This medical
condition called Encephalocele and
in this baby it was an Extreme
variety, was diagnosed during
pregnancy. The baby was delivered
through the Caesarean section and
Dr. Hassan immediately involved
himself for the planning for
surgical repair.
The surgery was
performed on day eight after a
series of tests done on the baby
such as ultrasound, CT scan and MRI
of the brain. Dr. Hassan excised the
huge encephalocele successfully as
Dr. Abdulkader Higazi (Anesthesia
consultant) with 2 Surgical
Residents ( Dr. Najla Alothman & Dr.
Mohammad Hegazy) provided helping
hands. This was rewarded to the
RCH-Jubail Medical team and the
highest thanksgiving was returned to
God.
On post-operation
the baby was admitted for few days
in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
and was discharged home after
uneventful course. And as of today,
at age of three months, the baby boy
continues to receive follow-up care
in the outpatient clinics.
This surgical
performance of excellence was part
of series of surgeries undertaken at
the Royal Commission Hospital in
Jubail.
