Preventing Obesity Program organized by
Royal Commission Hospital

Obesity is considered as one of the serious health problems in this modern life. It is one of the common feeding problems. Several diseases caused by obesity such as:

  • Blood Pressure.

  • Heart Disease.

  • Arteriosclerosis.

  • Hyperlipoidemia

  • Hyperglycemia.

  • Cholesterol.

  • Respiration problems during sleeping.

  • Blood sugar.

The obesity percentage in the Kingdom is %30 and %30 overweight. but in Jubail area the obesity is %28 and %38 overweight.

It is well known that the most reasons, which cause obesity are:

  • Increasing of the obtained energy.

  • Decreasing of the exert energy.

Also, there are some other reasons, which cause imbalance between the obtained energy and exert, one like:

  • Heredity and environmental elements.

  • Psychological factors and endocrine gland diseases.

The researches of 2002 especially (Jung’s study on obesity) mentioned that: lost of %5 to %10 of the weight lead to:

  • Decrease %25 of death rate or the diseases caused by obesity.

  • Lessening of %50 of sugar disease.

  • Reduce %10 of Cholesterol.

  • Increase %8 of good cholesterol HDL.

For this purpose an Obesity Clinic has been opened in the Royal Commission Hospital. The goal of this clinic is to reduce and to treat the obesity cases. This program is under supervision of a medical team consisted of:

  • Endocrinologist.

  • General Surgery.

  • Plastic Surgery.

  • Psychiatrics specialist.

  • Dietitian.

  • Health education specialist.

  • Physiotherapist.

In this Clinic a medical examination is done including the following:

  • Clinical and laboratory examination.

  • Taking the measurement of the body (Weight, tall, neck circumference, waist circumference and pelvic circumference for female).

  • Study the history of the patient to know the reasons of the obesity.

  • The role of dietitian and Health Education is: To understand the patient life style.

  • To recognize the patient wrong customs during eating to reach the real reasons lead to the obesity.

  • To explain to him the different between his food pattern and the correct one and his wrong habits.

This program was developed taking into account the health awareness and education of the community through:

  • Spreading of Health Programs.

  • Education of patients within T.V. and Broadcasting.

  • Lectures and Symposiums.

  • Distributing of books and booklets regarding obesity.

Hundreds of patients are followed this program. Their conditions improved gradually and some of them lost %10 of their weight within three months. The difficult cases will be treated surgically.
